Inside mount:

  • Clean look; lets architecture show
  • Install inside the window casing.
  • Use for shades, blinds or sill-length curtains.
  • Measure width and length inside the window frame, to the top of the sill.

How to measure an outside mount

Outside mount:

  • Soft; romantic; covers wimpy architecture
  • Install outside of window casing at desired height and width.
  • Use for shirred, tab-top, pleated or grommet curtains.
  • Measure height from where rod will be installed to where the covering will end (add four inches beyond molding to avoid gaps in coverage).

How to measure a ceiling mount

Ceiling mount:

  • Elegant; dramatic; makes windows look larger and ceiling higher
  • Install rod on wall just below ceiling.
  • Use for curtain and drapery window treatments.
  • Measure height from where rod will be installed to floor. For more drama, add six inches to the length for the fabric to puddle.

How to measure a flush mount

Flush mount:

  • Tidy, polished appearance
  • Install inside of window casing and flush with window frame.
  • Use for blinds and shades.
  • Measure like an inside mount, but add the depth of the inside of your window casing to ensure that it’s deep enough for mounting brackets and head rail.

To add drama:

When installing draperies on a rod, take the rod to just below ceiling height to make the window seem more dramatic and the ceilings taller. Soften the gap between the window and the ceiling with a valance, or simply let your wall color do the trick.

To add size:

For narrow windows or windows that seem too small for the wall, purchase a rod that extends 6 to 12 inches on either side of the window. Select ready-made panel curtains that fit the length of the rod rather than the window width. When open, the curtains can be pulled back to reveal the whole window.

To add structure:

When your windows lack architectural oomph, create more structure and interest with a valance. A valance is a little bit of fabric that makes a big impact across the top of the window and distracts from wimpy window architecture. Pair it with side curtains for a more complete cover-up.

Back tabs:  A series of tabs on the reverse side of the window panels that create uniform folds to an ordinary flat panel covering. A decorative rod threaded through the tabs creates a transitional look.

French pleat: A loose, three-fold stitched pleat that fans out at the top of a drapery. French pleats are used to add fullness to a more classic style window.

Grommet: A metal, plastic or rubber ring used to reinforce a hole in the fabric. A rod is threaded through a series of grommets for a contemporary look.

Panel: A single curtain or drapery. A conventional window treatment requires two panels. Additional panels added to each side of a window will create fullness.

Pinch pleat: The reverse of a French pleat—this type is cinched at the top of the pleat and fanned out at the bottom for a traditional look.

Rod pocket: A stitched pocket at the top of a curtain panel, which allows you to slide it onto a rod where it is gathered or shirred to the fullness you want.

Roman shades: A tailored fabric window covering that is drawn up from the bottom by hidden cords and rings to create soft, horizontal folds. A roman shade is flat when lowered and covers the window glass or casing completely.

Swag: One or more pieces of fabric draped over a rod, typically used at the top of a window treatment in combination with side panels.

Tab-top curtains: Curtains with fabric bands attached to the top that a rod threads through. Similarly, back-tab curtains have hidden tabs that create subtle pleats.

Valance: A window dressing that covers the top of the window and sometimes hides drapery hardware. It can be used on its own or layered over curtains, shades or blinds.

Window scarf: A long strip of fabric casually draped over a pole or rod at the top of a window like a valance.

  1. Bold patterns at the windows lend design energy to a room.
    The look:
Showcase graphic motifs in window dressings, and leave the rest of the room relatively pattern-free.
  2. Shimmery fabrics add a sense of luxury and tactile interest.
The look: Silky curtain panels that flow to the floor in lush folds offer a simple, elegant look that adds a sense of opulence to a space without feeling heavy or overdone.
Tip-4B-square_0381
  1. Sheers soften window architecture but still let natural light grace a space. The look: White sheers are classic, but designers are having fun with new colorful sheers that put a pop of backlit color into a room’s backgrounds.
  2. Tone-on-tone backgrounds, created by painting walls the same shade as your drapery fabric, offer polish and calm.
The look: Neutrals or pale shades work well, but designers also are going all in with jewel tones such as brilliant blues and ruby reds.
  3. Layered dressings bring personal style to windows and a cozy feeling to the entire room.
The look: Try carefree combinations such as neutral curtain panels topped with a casually draped scarf valance. Add natural texture with a simple matchstick blind texture underneath.
  4. Pattern mixing adds visual punch to a solid fabric treatment.
The look: Bookend solid fabric curtain panels with two printed or woven patterned panels on a large picture window for a clever banded look.

Mattress pad

A quality mattress pad keeps a fitted sheet snug, adds a layer of comfort (and protection!) to your mattress and wicks away moisture. Shop for the right size to fit your mattress depth, and make sure it has elastic all around for a secure fit. Polyester is the most common fill for mattress pads—the more ounces it has, the softer the mattress pad. For extra comfort, look for a dual-layer mattress pad that includes a bottom layer for support and a lofty top layer for extra cushiony comfort. Look to Royal Velvet’s Luxury Loft, Simply Elegant or Washable Memory Foam Mattress Pads.

Tip-5B_0500

Down comforter or duvet

Traditionally, a duvet (“down” in Old French, where the concept originated) is a comforter that matches the size of the bed. Today, when Americans refer to a duvet, we most often mean a comforter that falls over the sides of the bed and is designed to slip into a protective, washable duvet cover. Down comforters offer cozy warmth, but they also breathe well, so lightweight types can be used year-round. Fluffy and soft alternatives are available, without the allergens or costs associated with down. Shop for comforters with a baffled construction that keeps the filling evenly distributed. Check out Royal Velvet’s Big and Soft Extra Warmth Down Alternative Comforter or Perfect Medium Warmth Down Comforter.

Tip-5C_0528

Bed pillows

The type of pillow you choose is a matter of personal preference and sleep style. But whether you prefer soft down, firmer synthetic fillings or a flexible, memory-foam type, shop for pillows with cotton covers that have a 300- or higher-count as a measure of quality and comfort. Some comfortable choices include Royal Velvet’s Ultimate Support Pillow or Luxury Down Pillow.

Step 1: Spread your fitted sheet on a large flat surface such as a table or a bed, elastic edges facing up.

Step 2: Fold the sheet in half horizontally, tucking the fitted top corners neatly into the bottom corners.

Step 3: Tuck the elastic edges into each other as well. Smooth the edges flat.

Tip-6B_0327

Step 4: Fold the sheet so that all four fitted corners are on top of one another. Again, slide the top set of corners into the bottom set, lining up the corners neatly.

Tip-6C_0333

Step 5: Fold the sheet in half again, and then fold over the smooth side so that all the elastic is inside and you have a strip. Fold the short edges over each other until you’ve reached the size you want.

Tip-6D_0341

Step 6: Sandwich the fitted sheet in between the folds of the flat sheet so you keep like sets together. Don’t forget to include your pillowcases, too.

Stylist tip: When possible, machine-dry linens on a medium-heat setting. High heat will weaken the fabric more quickly. Remove linens from the dryer promptly to avoid wrinkles.

Tip-7B_0400

Use a quality sheet set. Cotton is the favorite textile for bed linens. It gets softer with each wash and is best at wicking away moisture from your body. Remember, a higher thread count doesn’t necessarily mean softer sheets. It means a tight, durable weave. For softness, shop for Egyptian or pima cotton or check the label for the words sateen or percale, which indicate quality fibers.

Dress it right. With your mattress pad and fitted sheet tucked in tightly, you’re ready to drape the top sheet over your bed. Align the top edge with the top of your mattress. Before you tuck in the top sheet, add a blanket aligned with the flat sheet. For hotel-quality corners, first hold the long edges of the sheet and blanket away from the bed and then fold them back over it. Lift the foot of the mattress, and use your hand to slide the draping bottom edges of the bed linens beneath it. Now tuck in the side edges so that the corner forms a crisp crease. Turn down the sheet and the blanket tops about the width of a pillow. Then tuck the long edges under the mattress along the sides.

Top it off. Whether you go with a cozy quilt, a puffy comforter or a downy duvet, spread it over the bed and center it so that it hangs evenly. Leave the folded-down sheet and blanket exposed at the top, but cover their bottom edges completely.

Layer the pillows. Start with the pillows you’ll sleep on, plumped and propped against the headboard. If you’re using 26- to 32-inch European pillows, add those next. Then come standard-size shams and, finally, throw and bolster pillows (three are usually plenty).

Add a coverlet or throw. Depending on the look you’re after, you can fold it into a neat strip or toss it casually over the foot of the bed.

For the romantic: Select a set with pretty detailing, such as Royal Velvet’s Captiva Comforter Set that features an embroidered scroll pattern. Tuck in a blanket in a complementary color so that the bed looks as if it evolved over time. The Royal Velvet Silk Touch Blanket adds both shimmery texture and a soft layer of color. Mix in a few more layers of pattern, soft color and accent with Euro shams—the Royal Velvet Coralie shams could link to the blanket’s color—and a decorative pillow such as the Captiva oblong.

Tip-8B_0227

For the minimalist: Opt for solid colors, and limit layering. Royal Velvet’s Damask Stripe comforter set offers a clean look with subtle tone-on-tone striped pattern for interest or reverses to a solid color. Pair it with crisp, white cotton sheets from Royal Velvet’s 400-count WrinkleGuard Sheet Set, and layer a white Egyptian-cotton blanket. Add a tailored bed skirt such as Royal Velvet’s Cotton Sateen bed skirt in white to finish out the crisp look.

Tip-8C_3818

For the traditionalist: Dress your bed with a classic, elegant pattern, and then add a few well-thought-out extras. Royal Velvet’s Palais comforter set features a woven medallion pattern and chenille cord trim in soft, sophisticated neutral hues. Add ivory linens with additional classic detailing, such as Royal Velvet’s 400-count WrinkleGuard Sheet Set with an embroidered edge. For opulence, pile on a few more pillows, such as luxurious Damask Stripe Euro squares combined with a single bolster, or a neat layer of oblong decorative pillows. Instead of a blanket, top with a classic Royal Velvet Coralie Matelassé coverlet, folded neatly at the foot of the bed.

First, consider your favorite sleeping position.

Back sleeper: A flat, medium-soft pillow will keep your upper spine properly aligned and lend good support to your neck and head. Consider Royal Velvet’s Ultimate Support Pillow or RV’s Luxury Gel Down-Alternative Pillow.

Side sleeper: A lofty but firm pillow will best fill in the gap between your shoulders, neck and head. Consider Royal Velvet’s Luxury Down/Feather Pillow or RV’s Beyond Down Side Sleeper Pillow

Stomach sleeper: A soft, medium-support pillow means your head won’t be forced to turn at an uncomfortable angle. Consider Royal Velvet’s Down Chamber Pillow.

Then choose a filling based on personal preference.

Goose down or feather filling is best when you want to feel nestled in cloudlike softness. Down also retains warmth to keep you toasty in chilly rooms. On good-quality versions, look for fill power. A higher number means a plumper, more lasting pillow. Consider Royal Velvet’s Luxury Down Pillow

Memory foam or memory-foam alternatives are springy types of bed pillows that mold themselves to your head and pop back into shape when the pressure is lifted. It’s a good choice for restless sleepers as it recalibrates to changing positions. Consider Royal Velvet’s Memorelle Memory Fiber-Alternative Pillow.

Polyester filling is less expensive than down or memory foam. This type works well for those who like a soft pillow with a bit more support than down. There are varying degrees of polyester fill, so give the pillow a squeeze to determine its relative softness or firmness. Consider

  • Make a fun DIY towel rod with materials from a hardware store. Shop for rope for a casual, coastal feel; plumbing pipes and fittings for industrial-chic fun; or wire cable for a modern look.
  • Create a focal-point wall with paint. Cover three walls in a saturated color with a flat finish. Then paint one wall—a vanity wall or a tub niche, for instance—in a glossy finish of the same paint color. Or go a shade or two brighter for more contrast. For more texture, create a striated effect by first painting the wall in the flat color. Next, paint a topcoat in the glossy finish. To make a pattern, cut out notches in a squeegee’s rubber edge. Before the paint dries, drag the squeegee through it, starting at ceiling height and working down to the floor.
  • Use a shower curtain for more than showering. A far cry from the stiff, plastic models of the past, shower curtains are now available in a host of patterns and colors. Plus, polyester types are waterproof, and they drape softly. Use the affordable fabric as a window treatment by cutting and hemming it to fit your window. Or update a dreary sink vanity by removing cupboard doors and replacing them with soft folds of fabric. You can also resize a curtain into a skirt for a pedestal sink to hide plumbing or create a hidden storage area.

Cut out the visual noise. Tuck away the tangle of electrical cords or excess clutter into easy-access baskets. Dispense with glaring product labels by transferring them into pretty containers that you’ll like looking at and handling.

Soften the setting. Pamper yourself with towels that are soft and cozy. And be sure to step from your shower or bath onto an extra-plush bath mat. These are life’s little luxuries—and your investment will pay you back with longer-lasting products.

Enclose yourself with a pretty shower curtain. The pleasure of a spa is its ability to take you away from daily stresses. Want to feel transported? Create a beautiful, intimate barrier between yourself and the outside world.

Create a softer mood. Is overhead lighting too harsh? Install a dimmer switch, or switch the bulbs off completely and light scented candles for romance and a little aromatherapy. If street (or household!) noise is an issue, be ready to turn on some relaxing music.

Choose a calming color palette. Though white-on-white often comes to mind when you think of a spa, some people may find it a bit cold and sterile. Shift to a soft, nature-based palette of pale blues or greens or quiet neutrals such as gray or ivory. Bonus: These shades are also easier to keep clean.

Draw color inspiration from an adjoining bedroom or the rest of your house. Pick up an accent color from your bedroom, for instance, and make it a primary color in your bath. The bathroom will have its own interesting identity, but the color flow will make your home feel more pulled-together.

Strike the right mood. If you want your bathroom to energize you, give it bright shots of color. For a calming scheme, shift to neutrals or hints of pale colors. For a bathroom that looks good around you, choose cosmetic colors in shades of pink or coral.

Trust deeper hues to create drama. Forget the old rules about using only light colors in tight spaces. Rich, dark hues conjure up intimacy and a sense of security—perfect for a small bathroom.

Prevent the space from becoming too sterile. Warm a bathroom with texture and pattern to counter all the slick surfaces. Layer on texture with plush towels. Or add a pop of pattern to a shower curtain, for instance, or with veined marble countertops or an interesting tile application.

Think about what kind of light your bathroom receives. If it faces north or has few windows, warm your space with colors in the yellow or red family. Need to cool off a space bathed in light? Add watery shades of blue and green.
